Contraindications

Liver disease. Depression. Parkinson's disease. Driving/operating machinery.

Interactions

SIGNIFICANT interactions with alcohol, sedatives, anxiolytics, antidepressants, levodopa, and hepatotoxic drugs.

Side Effects

Drowsiness, GI upset, headache. Long-term: skin rash (kava dermopathy), liver damage.

Surgery: Discontinue at least 2 weeks before surgery (enhances sedation).
Liver: SERIOUS CONCERN: Reports of severe liver damage including hepatitis, cirrhosis, and liver failure. Some countries have restricted or banned kava supplements. Use only noble kava cultivars, never stem/leaf products.
