Contraindications

Hypertension, heart disease, kidney disease, liver disease, low potassium. Hormone-sensitive conditions. Max 4-6 weeks use of whole licorice (DGL is safer long-term).

Interactions

SIGNIFICANT interactions with blood pressure medications, diuretics, corticosteroids, digoxin, warfarin, MAOIs, oral contraceptives, and potassium-depleting drugs.

Side Effects

Whole licorice: water retention, high blood pressure, low potassium, headache, fatigue. DGL form avoids most of these.

Surgery: Discontinue 2 weeks before surgery.
Liver: May worsen liver disease.
Kidney: May worsen kidney disease and cause potassium depletion.
