Decoction Calculator

Decoctions extract tough plant parts — roots, barks, seeds, fungi, hard berries. They need longer heat and more water than infusions. Gives you a water ratio and simmer time based on the part and amount of herb.

Water to start

300 mL

1.3 cups

Simmer time

20-30 min

covered, gentle simmer

Most roots — dandelion, burdock, ginger (dried), astragalus.

Method (short)

  1. Place herb in cold water in a non-reactive pot (glass, ceramic, stainless).
  2. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a gentle simmer (covered).
  3. Simmer for the time indicated by the part. Roots/barks: 20-45 min. Hard fungi: 1-2 hours.
  4. Strain. Standard therapeutic dose is 1 cup (~240 mL) 2-3× daily, unless otherwise indicated.
  5. Refrigerate extra; use within 48 hours for fresh-made decoctions.
