Keynote Symptoms

Fair, fat, flabby. Head sweats profusely during sleep, wetting the pillow. Cold, clammy feet (wears socks to bed). Sour discharges — sweat, stool, vomit. Craves eggs and indigestible things (chalk, dirt, pencils). Slow development in children — late walking, late teething, fontanelles open.

Mind & Emotional Symptoms

Apprehensive, fears loss of reason, misfortune, contagious diseases. Easily overwhelmed, cannot cope with responsibilities. Obstinate, slow, cautious. Aversion to work. Forgetful, confused. Homesickness. Despair of recovery. Fears others will observe her confusion.

General Symptoms

Chilly, cold, worse from cold wet weather. Profuse sour perspiration, especially on head at night. Deficient assimilation of calcium. Glandular swellings. Worse from exertion (mental or physical), cold, damp, full moon, standing, milk. Better from dry weather, lying on painful side, dark.

Physical Symptoms

Head

Open fontanelles, large head. Profuse perspiration wets the pillow. Vertigo on ascending. Icy coldness on or in the head. Headache with cold hands.

Eyes

Sensitive to light. Lachrymation in open air and early morning. Spots and ulcers on cornea.

Ears

Throbbing, cracking. Offensive otorrhoea. Polyps. Deafness from working in water.

Nose

Dry, nostrils sore, ulcerated. Stoppage of nose. Offensive odour in nose. Polyps.

Mouth

Difficult dentition in children. Sour taste. Teeth ache from cold or warm things. Burning tip of tongue.

Throat

Swelling of tonsils and submaxillary glands. Difficulty swallowing. Painless hoarseness.

Stomach

Ravenous hunger. Craves eggs, salt, sweets, indigestible things. Aversion to meat, milk (though may also crave it). Sour eructations, sour vomiting. Milk disagrees.

Abdomen

Enlarged mesenteric glands. Hard, distended. Incarcerated flatulence. Inguinal and umbilical hernias.

Rectum

Sour-smelling stool. First part hard, then pasty, then liquid. Children's diarrhea with sour smell.

Female Genitalia

Menses too early, too profuse, too long. Vertigo with menses. Profuse milky leucorrhoea. Breasts tender and swollen before menses.

Respiratory

Shortness of breath on going upstairs or any exertion. Tickling cough at night. Painless hoarseness.

Chest

Chest sore. Milk too abundant or deficient. Nipples cracked.

Back

Curvature of vertebrae. Pain between shoulder blades. Weakness of back, must lean against something.

Extremities

Cold, damp feet. Soles of feet raw. Rheumatism from working in water. Cramps in calves.

Skin

Unhealthy; small wounds do not heal readily. Petechiae. Warts. Polyps.

Comparative Materia Medica

Silicea also has sweaty head but is thin, chilly, and yields to pressure (lacks Calcarea's stubbornness). Baryta carbonica has delayed development but more marked mental slowness. Phosphorus has similar fears but is slender, warm-blooded.
