Keynote Symptoms
Violent spasmodic cough — paroxysms follow each other so rapidly the patient cannot catch breath. Deep, hollow, barking cough from tickling in larynx. Holds chest with both hands during cough. Cough ends with retching, gagging, or vomiting. Worse after midnight, lying down.
Mind & Emotional Symptoms
Restless, anxious, suspicious. Fear of being alone. Difficulty concentrating. Obstinate.
General Symptoms
Spasmodic conditions, especially respiratory. Worse after midnight, from lying down, warmth, drinking, laughing, singing. Better from open air, pressure, motion, sitting up.
Physical Symptoms
Throat
Roughness, scraping, dryness. Voice deep, hoarse, toneless. Sensation of crumb in larynx.
Respiratory
Spasmodic, dry, irritating cough from tickling in the larynx. Paroxysms of cough come so rapidly that breath cannot be caught. Barking, deep, hollow. Cough ends in retching and vomiting. Must hold chest during cough. Whooping cough.
Chest
Constriction and stitching. Sore, bruised feeling. Must hold chest with both hands when coughing.
Stomach
Retching and vomiting from cough. Nausea. Aversion to pork.
Extremities
Stiffness of ankles. Growing pains.
Fever / Chill / Perspiration
Shivering while at rest. Cold extremities.

Better From
Open air, motion, pressure on chest, sitting up, walking
Worse From
After midnight (especially 2 AM), lying down, warmth of bed, drinking, laughing, singing, talking
Constitutional Type
Not strongly constitutional. Primarily an acute remedy for spasmodic cough.

Comparative Materia Medica
Coccus cacti has similar cough ending in vomiting of stringy mucus but more in morning. Corallium rubrum has rapid-fire minute gun cough. Spongia has dry, barking cough like a saw but more croupy.
Safety Information
Camphora, Nux vomica.
The fresh plant juice is mildly irritating. No significant toxicity. Safe in all potencies.
