Keynote Symptoms
Breathing stops on falling asleep — must stay awake to breathe (Cheyne-Stokes-like). Spasmodic asthma with wheezing and profuse tenacious expectoration. Cannot breathe lying down. Splenic engorgement. Skin eruptions from poison oak. Old malarial symptoms.
Mind & Emotional Symptoms
Cannot think coherently. Dull. Depressed. Fearful on falling asleep because breathing stops.
General Symptoms
Worse from falling asleep, lying down, fog, dampness, smoke. Better from sitting up, expectoration.

Respiratory
Asthma — must sit up to breathe, cannot lie down. Wheezing, rattling. Profuse, tough, tenacious expectoration. Breathing stops on falling asleep — patient starts awake gasping. Cheyne-Stokes respiration. Chronic bronchitis.

Catarrh of bladder. Scanty urine. Retention.

Comparative Materia Medica
Lachesis also has suffocation on falling asleep but with more jealousy and left-sidedness. Sambucus has suffocative attacks in children waking from sleep. Opium has breathing stopping during sleep but more stuporous. Spongia has croup waking from sleep.
Safety Information
Not well established.
Grindelia is mildly toxic. The resinous secretion can cause GI upset in large doses. Historically used as an antispasmodic and expectorant. Low toxicity. Safe in all potencies and mother tincture.
