Keynote Symptoms

Ravenous appetite yet progressive emaciation — eats all the time but wastes away. Better from eating, worse when hungry. Hot patient — intolerant of heat. Glandular enlargement and hardening (thyroid, lymph nodes, ovaries, testes). Restless, anxious, must be occupied. Trophic changes — everything atrophies except the glands.

Mind & Emotional Symptoms

Anxiety when quiet — must be busy, occupied. Impulsive. Present anxiety with fear of the future. Cross, irritable when hungry. Kills impulse — sudden destructive thoughts. Memory poor. Hurried. Better from occupation.

General Symptoms

Hot patient — worse from warmth, warm room, warm wrappings. Better from cold, eating, open air, motion. Ravenous hunger — must eat or becomes faint, irritable, anxious. Glandular enlargement. Emaciation of all tissues except glands.

Physical Symptoms

Head

Throbbing headache. Vertigo. Chronic congestive headache.

Eyes

Protruding (exophthalmos). Watering. Staring.

Throat

Thyroid enlarged — goitre. Hard. Graves' disease with exophthalmos, tachycardia, tremor. Sensation of constriction.

Stomach

Ravenous, insatiable hunger. Must eat frequently or becomes anxious. Throbbing in stomach. Empty feeling. Better immediately after eating.

Respiratory

Hoarseness. Dry croupy cough. Pneumonia with rapid emaciation. Laryngitis.

Chest

Comparative Materia Medica

Natrum muriaticum has emaciation and thyroid involvement but is more reserved and worse from consolation. Bromium has thyroid enlargement but fair-haired and better at sea. Spongia has thyroid but with more croupy cough. Phosphorus is thin but more sociable and thirsty.

Antidoting Substances

Antimonium tartaricum, Arsenicum album, China, Coffea, Graphites, Gratiola, Hepar, Phosphorus, Sulphur. Starch antidotes chemically.

Material Dose Toxicity

Elemental iodine is corrosive and toxic. Causes severe burns to mucous membranes, thyroid dysfunction, iodism (metallic taste, coryza, salivation, skin rash). Fatal dose ~2g. Use only potentised forms.
