Keynote Symptoms
Intercostal neuralgia — sharp, stitching pains in chest walls, worse from motion, touch, atmospheric changes. Herpes zoster (shingles) with burning, stinging vesicles along nerve paths. Vesicular eruptions — bluish, filled with acrid fluid. Soreness of chest walls. Worse from changes of temperature and weather.
Mind & Emotional Symptoms
Irritable. Quarrelsome. Fear especially in evening. Cloudy, dull mind.
General Symptoms
Muscular and nerve pains, especially chest walls. Vesicular eruptions. Worse from atmospheric changes, damp cold, touch, motion, inspiration, open air, evening. Better from standing, sitting erect.
Physical Symptoms
Head
Pressing headache. Vertigo. Headache in forehead.
Eyes
Smarting, pressing. Day blindness.
Chest
Intercostal neuralgia — stitching, sharp pains between ribs. Sore to touch. Pleurodynia. Herpes on chest wall. Worse from inspiration, motion, touch. Sharp pain from chest to back.
Back
Pain between scapulae. Stiffness. Worse from touch, motion.
Skin
Vesicular eruptions — bluish, with acrid, burning fluid. Herpes zoster. Pemphigus. Horny skin of palms. Eczema with vesicles. Corns that are very tender.
Extremities
Gout of fingers and toes. Corns painful.

Constitutional Type
Not strongly constitutional. Used primarily for intercostal pains and herpetic eruptions.
Clinical Indications
Herpes zoster (shingles), intercostal neuralgia, pleurodynia, vesicular eruptions, corns, chest wall pain, neuralgia
Comparative Materia Medica
Mezereum has herpetic eruptions but with burning after scratching and brownish crusts. Rhus tox has vesicular eruptions with itching but better from warmth and motion. Arsenicum has burning vesicles but more restlessness and thirst.
Safety Information
Bryonia, Camphora, Pulsatilla, Rhus tox.
Buttercup contains protoanemonin, an irritant causing blistering of skin and mucous membranes, GI inflammation. Fresh plant is caustic. Drying destroys the toxin. Use potentised forms.
