Keynote Symptoms
Violence is the keynote — violent delirium, violent convulsions, violent pains. Terrified of the dark, must have light and company. Fear of water (hydrophobia), shining objects, tunnels. Stammering, jerking, twitching. Painlessness of complaints that are usually painful. Suppression leads to mental symptoms.
Mind & Emotional Symptoms
Violent, raging delirium — bites, strikes, tears clothes. Terrified — clings to those around. Sees ghosts, hears voices, talks to imaginary people. Fear of dark, water, shining objects, tunnels, being alone. Night terrors in children — wakes screaming, does not recognize parents. Loquacity. Religious mania. Obscene speech and actions.
General Symptoms
Ailments from fright, dark, suppressed eruptions, or emotions. Painlessness is remarkable — conditions that should be painful are not. Involuntary motions — jerking, twitching, chorea. Worse from dark, solitude, looking at shining objects, after sleep, swallowing. Better from light, company, warmth.
Physical Symptoms
Head
Raises head frequently from pillow. Meningitis with wild delirium. Boring head into pillow. Brain feels as if loose.
Eyes
Widely dilated pupils. Staring, glistening eyes. Objects look crooked, distorted. Squinting.
Face
Hot, red, bloated. Circumscribed redness of cheeks. Expression of terror. Risus sardonicus (sardonic grin). Lockjaw.
Mouth
Stammering. Has to exert himself a long time before he can utter a word. Dry, mouth and throat. Grinding of teeth. Foam at mouth.
Throat
Spasm of throat on attempting to swallow, especially liquids. Constriction. Dryness. Cannot swallow on account of spasm. Hydrophobic symptoms.
Stomach
Violent thirst but dread of water. Nausea and vomiting.
Abdomen
Distended, hard. Colic from suppressed eruptions.
Respiratory
Suffocative feeling. Asthma worse in dark. Croup with sawing respiration. Voice hoarse, squeaky.
Extremities
Chorea — involuntary jerking and twitching. Trembling. Graceful rhythmic motions. Convulsions.
Skin
Suppressed eruptions lead to brain symptoms. Scarlet rash. Boils. Abscess.
Sleep & Dreams
Night terrors — child wakes screaming, does not recognize anyone. Sleeps with eyes half open. Restless, violent during sleep.

Burning heat of body. Profuse perspiration that does not relieve. Scarlet fever with delirium.

Comparative Materia Medica
Belladonna has similar violence and redness but more throbbing, hot head, dilated pupils; Stramonium is more terrified and worse in dark. Hyoscyamus has delirium but more lascivious and less violent. Aconitum has fear but in the first sudden stage.

All parts of Datura stramonium are highly toxic, containing tropane alkaloids (scopolamine, atropine, hyoscyamine). Causes delirium, hallucinations, dilated pupils, tachycardia, seizures, coma, death. Use only potentised forms.
