Keynote Symptoms

Cardiac tonic — increases force of heart contraction without the cumulative dangers of Digitalis. Pulse becomes stronger, more regular. Cardiac dropsy — edema reduces as heart strengthens. Diuretic through cardiac improvement. Useful in mitral regurgitation, cardiac failure. Does not slow pulse as much as Digitalis.

Comparative Materia Medica

Digitalis has similar cardiac action but cumulates dangerously. Crataegus is a milder tonic. Convallaria has irritable heart. Adonis has cardiac failure.

Material Dose Toxicity

Strophanthus contains ouabain (g-strophanthin) — a potent cardiac glycoside. Highly toxic in crude doses. Used pharmacologically (IV ouabain) for acute heart failure. Does not accumulate like digitalis. Use potentised forms or low-dose MT under medical supervision.
