Overview

Acne involves hormones, bacteria, inflammation, and sebum production. Herbal approaches address the root causes — hormonal balance, liver detox, and anti-inflammatory/antimicrobial support.

Common Symptoms

Whiteheads, blackheads, papules, pustules, cystic lesions, oily skin, scarring.

When to Seek Medical Care

If acne is severe, scarring, or not responding to OTC treatments. If hormonal imbalance is suspected. For prescription options.

General Self-Care Basics

Gentle cleansing (don't over-wash). Non-comedogenic products. Reduce dairy and high-glycemic foods. Manage stress. Don't pick. Change pillowcases frequently.

Herbal Support Options

Tea Tree Oil topically is the most studied herbal acne treatment (5% gel comparable to benzoyl peroxide). Vitex (Chasteberry) for hormonal acne in women. Spearmint tea has anti-androgenic effects for hormonal acne. Burdock Root and Dandelion Root support liver detox (skin-liver connection). Zinc (not an herb but essential for acne). Neem topically for antimicrobial. Green Tea topically reduces sebum.

Pregnancy & Nursing Notes

Many acne treatments (retinoids, salicylic acid) are unsafe in pregnancy. Tea tree oil topically is generally safe. Consult your provider.

Pediatric Notes

Gentle approaches for teens — Tea tree oil, zinc, and gentle cleansing. Avoid aggressive treatments.

Red Flags

Severe cystic acne. Acne with signs of hormonal disorder (irregular periods, hair growth). Sudden severe acne in adults.

When to Avoid Self-Treatment

Severe cystic acne may need medical treatment to prevent scarring. Don't delay treatment.
