Overview

Prolonged stress taxes the HPA axis (hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal). While "adrenal fatigue" isn't a recognized medical diagnosis, chronic stress exhaustion is real. Adaptogens are the primary herbal category.

Common Symptoms

Persistent fatigue despite sleep, difficulty waking, afternoon energy crash, salt/sugar cravings, brain fog, decreased stress tolerance, low motivation.

When to Seek Medical Care

If fatigue is severe and persistent. Rule out thyroid, anemia, depression, and true adrenal insufficiency (Addison's disease) with medical testing.

General Self-Care Basics

Prioritize sleep (8-9 hours). Reduce caffeine. Regular meals with protein. Gentle exercise (not intense — overtraining worsens it). Say no to commitments. Nature time.

Herbal Support Options

Ashwagandha is the most studied adaptogen for HPA axis support and cortisol regulation. Rhodiola for mental/physical stamina and stress resilience. Eleuthero (Siberian Ginseng) for sustained energy without stimulation. Holy Basil (Tulsi) for daily stress resilience.
