Overview

Altitude sickness occurs from rapid ascent to high elevations before body adapts. Can be mild or severe. Herbal support can help with symptoms — severe cases need descent and medical care.

Common Symptoms

Headache, nausea, fatigue, dizziness, shortness of breath, appetite loss, disrupted sleep, typically 6-10 hours after ascent.

When to Seek Medical Care

Severe headache, vomiting, confusion, breathing difficulty at rest, blue lips — may be HAPE or HACE, medical emergencies requiring immediate descent.

General Self-Care Basics

Gradual ascent, adequate hydration, avoid alcohol, avoid intense exercise first day, iron supplementation if anemic, climb high/sleep low strategy.
