Overview

Bone spurs (osteophytes) are bony outgrowths from joints due to wear and tear. Most are asymptomatic. When painful, anti-inflammatory approach helps.

Common Symptoms

Often none. When symptomatic: localized pain, reduced range of motion, stiffness, weakness (if nerve compression), numbness or tingling.

When to Seek Medical Care

Severe pain not responding to self-care, neurological symptoms, significant mobility restrictions warrant imaging and evaluation.

General Self-Care Basics

Rest painful area, ice for acute pain, appropriate footwear (for heel spurs), weight management, physical therapy, orthotics if needed.
