Red painful skin (1st degree), blistering (2nd degree), white/charred skin (3rd degree — emergency). Pain may not be present in deep burns (nerve damage).
Burns larger than palm size, deep burns (white/charred), electrical or chemical burns, burns on face/hands/genitals/joints, burns in children/elderly, signs of infection.
Cool running water for 10-20 minutes immediately, remove jewelry before swelling, loose sterile dressing, OTC pain relief, don't use ice or butter, don't pop blisters.
ONLY after burn is cooled: Aloe Vera (fresh) is ideal. Honey for minor burns (antimicrobial, healing). Lavender oil diluted. Calendula once cooled. Internally: Vitamin E and C for healing. DO NOT apply greasy substances like butter or toothpaste.
