Overview

Coughs can be acute (from infection) or chronic (from allergies, reflux, asthma, or other conditions). Herbal expectorants, demulcents, and antitussives address different cough types.

Common Symptoms

Coughing, throat irritation, chest tightness, mucus production, sleep disruption, chest or abdominal muscle soreness.

When to Seek Medical Care

Coughing blood, difficulty breathing, cough lasting over 3 weeks, fever over 101°F, chest pain, or worsening symptoms need medical evaluation.

General Self-Care Basics

Adequate hydration, honey for soothing, humidifier, elevate head when sleeping, avoid smoke and irritants, warm liquids, rest.
