Overview

High cholesterol is a major cardiovascular risk factor. Several herbs and supplements have evidence for supporting healthy lipid levels alongside diet and lifestyle changes.

Common Symptoms

Usually silent — detected through blood tests. High total cholesterol, high LDL, low HDL, high triglycerides.

When to Seek Medical Care

For regular lipid panel testing. If lifestyle changes aren't enough. If you have family history of early heart disease.

General Self-Care Basics

Mediterranean diet, regular exercise, healthy weight, increase soluble fiber, reduce saturated/trans fats, omega-3 fatty acids, reduce refined carbs.

Herbal Support Options

Red Yeast Rice contains natural lovastatin — strongest evidence but same cautions as statins. Berberine lowers LDL and triglycerides. Garlic modestly reduces total cholesterol. Artichoke Leaf supports bile/cholesterol metabolism. Psyllium fiber (soluble) lowers LDL. Plant sterols/stanols block cholesterol absorption. Green Tea catechins. Guggul is used in Ayurveda for lipids.

Pregnancy & Nursing Notes

Cholesterol management herbs should not be used during pregnancy. Cholesterol naturally rises in pregnancy.

Pediatric Notes

Focus on diet and exercise for children. Cholesterol herbs are not for pediatric use.

Red Flags

Very high triglycerides (>500 — pancreatitis risk). Familial hypercholesterolemia. Chest pain or cardiovascular symptoms.

When to Avoid Self-Treatment

Do not use Red Yeast Rice with statin medications (same compound). Work with your doctor for cholesterol management.

Warning:Do not use this site for medical emergencies. If you are experiencing severe or urgent symptoms, seek immediate medical care or call 911.
