Overview

Kidney stones are mineral deposits that form in kidneys and cause severe pain when passing. Prevention focuses on hydration and diet. Some herbs may help prevent or dissolve smaller stones.

Common Symptoms

Severe flank or back pain, pain radiating to groin, blood in urine, nausea, vomiting, frequent urination, fever with infection.

When to Seek Medical Care

Acute kidney stone pain usually requires emergency care. Fever with stone, inability to urinate, persistent vomiting, single kidney with stone, large stones (may need procedure).

General Self-Care Basics

Drink lots of water (2-3 liters daily), reduce sodium, moderate animal protein, adequate calcium from food, limit oxalates if oxalate stones, maintain healthy weight.
