Overview

Nausea and vomiting during pregnancy affect most women in the first trimester. Ginger is the most-studied and safest herbal option. Severe cases (hyperemesis gravidarum) require medical care.

Common Symptoms

Nausea (especially in morning but can be anytime), vomiting, food aversions, sensitivity to smells, fatigue, decreased appetite.

When to Seek Medical Care

Inability to keep fluids down, weight loss, signs of dehydration, vomiting blood. Hyperemesis gravidarum requires medical treatment.

General Self-Care Basics

Small frequent meals, crackers before rising, ginger tea or candies, adequate hydration, avoiding trigger foods/smells, vitamin B6 (with provider approval), acupressure wristbands.

Herbal Support Options

Ginger is the first-line herbal option with strong evidence. Peppermint (inhaled or weak tea) for milder cases. Red Raspberry Leaf in second trimester. Avoid most other herbs during first trimester.
