Overview

Pleurisy is inflammation of the pleura (lung lining). Causes include infection, trauma, autoimmune. Pain with breathing is characteristic. Requires diagnosis of underlying cause.

Common Symptoms

Sharp chest pain worse with breathing or coughing, pain that may radiate to shoulder, shortness of breath (shallow breathing to avoid pain), sometimes fever.
