Overview

Shingles is reactivation of chickenpox virus (varicella zoster). Antiviral medication early is most effective. Herbal support for pain and healing. Vaccine available for prevention.

Common Symptoms

Painful rash (usually one-sided, band-like), blisters, burning or shooting pain, sensitivity to touch, fatigue, fever, postherpetic neuralgia (lingering pain).

When to Seek Medical Care

Get antiviral medication within 72 hours of rash onset. Shingles near eye (ophthalmic involvement) is emergency. Severe pain needs medical management.

General Self-Care Basics

Keep rash clean and dry, loose clothing, cool compresses, rest, stress management, avoid touching rash, don't spread to immunocompromised people.

Herbal Support Options

Lysine internally. Lemon Balm topically and internally (antiviral for herpes family). St. John's Wort oil topically for nerve pain. Licorice root. Capsaicin cream after rash heals for PHN. B complex. Vitamin C and zinc. Olive Leaf.
