Overview

Sprains involve ligament injury; strains involve muscle or tendon injury. Both respond to RICE protocol (rest, ice, compression, elevation) plus anti-inflammatory herbs.

Common Symptoms

Pain, swelling, bruising, limited mobility, weakness, popping sound at time of injury (sprains), muscle spasm (strains).

When to Seek Medical Care

Inability to bear weight, severe pain, obvious deformity, numbness, no improvement in 3-5 days, or concern for fracture or significant ligament tear.

General Self-Care Basics

RICE first 48-72 hours, then gentle movement and physical therapy, avoid excessive rest long-term, gradual return to activity, support wraps as needed.

Herbal Support Options

Arnica cream topically (not on broken skin). Turmeric internally for inflammation. White Willow Bark for pain. Comfrey (intact skin only). Boswellia for inflammation. Bromelain reduces swelling. Ice/heat alternation. Epsom salt soaks.
