Overview

Sunburn is UV radiation damage to skin requiring prompt cooling and soothing support. Prevention with sunscreen and avoidance is far superior to treatment. Severe sunburns are burn injuries.

Common Symptoms

Red warm painful skin, tenderness, swelling, blistering (severe), chills, fever, nausea (severe sunburn = systemic symptoms), peeling skin days later.

When to Seek Medical Care

Severe blistering, fever over 102°F, signs of dehydration, blisters over large areas, face/genital burns, or signs of infection (pus, worsening pain).

General Self-Care Basics

Cool showers/baths, stay hydrated, avoid further sun, aloe vera, ibuprofen for inflammation, don't pop blisters, moisturize, wear loose clothing.

Herbal Support Options

Aloe Vera (fresh plant best) is the gold standard for sunburn relief. Calendula salve or oil for healing. Green Tea cooled topically. Lavender oil diluted. Witch Hazel for cooling. Internally: Turmeric for inflammation. Vitamin E orally and topically. Cool chamomile tea compresses.
