Pregnancy
Constipation in pregnancy
Progesterone slows GI motility; iron supplements compound it. Most pregnant people experience constipation. Stimulant laxatives can cause uterine contractions — start with fiber and hydration.
Key points
- ✓Ground flaxseed (1-2 tbsp daily) + extra water is often enough
- ✓Magnesium citrate (300-600 mg) softens stool without stimulating contractions
- ✓Psyllium husk is fiber-only; inert for pregnancy
- ✓Stimulant laxatives (senna, cascara) can trigger uterine contractions — avoid
- ✓Iron supplement may need formulation change (iron glycinate constipates less than ferrous sulfate)

Lifestyle & diet
Hydrate aggressively (80+ oz water/day), daily movement even gentle walking, prunes or warm lemon water on rising, squatty-potty posture for bathroom trips.
When to see a clinician
No bowel movement in 5+ days, severe abdominal pain, blood in stool, or vomiting — rule out obstruction.
