Understanding Notes

Every essential oil is classified by its evaporation rate — top, middle, or base. A balanced blend uses all three.

Top Notes

Evaporates in 1-2 hours

~30% of blend

First scent you notice — light, fresh, and uplifting. Evaporate quickly and provide the initial impression of the blend.

Middle Notes

Evaporates in 2-4 hours

~50% of blend

The heart of the blend — warm, rounded, and balancing. Bridges the top and base notes and provides body and character.

Base Notes

Evaporates in 4-8+ hours

~20% of blend

Deep, rich, and grounding. Slowest to evaporate. Anchors the blend, provides lasting depth, and acts as a natural fixative.

7 Steps to a Great Blend

Follow these principles to create balanced, effective, and beautiful-smelling blends.

1

Define Your Purpose

Start with what you want the blend to achieve — relaxation, energy, pain relief, skin care, etc.

2

Keep It Simple

Choose 3-5 oils maximum. Fewer oils creates a cleaner, more effective, and more harmonious blend.

3

Add Base First

Layer base notes first, then middle, then top. This allows the base to anchor everything.

4

Follow the Ratio

Use the 30-50-20 rule: 30% top notes, 50% middle notes, 20% base notes.

5

Test First

Smell your blend on a cotton ball or test strip before committing to a full bottle.

6

Let It Mature

Let blends sit 24-48 hours — the scent will evolve, meld, and deepen as oils marry together.

7

Think in Families

Oils from the same plant family blend naturally — citrus with citrus, herbs with herbs, woods with resins.
